Wouldn't it be marvelous to walk around the city or along the countryside and be able to recognize the trees and herbs by their name? How about being able to recognize the plants of your region and knowing which can be eaten or used as medicine?
Exactly those are the skills we want to develop while working on this project. We need to know what trees, shrubs and herbs grow in the farm's forest and get to learn their names and virtues. To do that, botanists fromThe Botanical Garden of Cartagena "Guillermo PiƱeres" visited the farm and are making a characterization of the vegation inside the land plot.
As we were walking along the path inside the forest, the botanists explained to us how to look at a tree to get to know it. By observing the bark, the leaves, the flowers and the fruit you can recognize the difference between trees of the same family.

This is the bark of an old oak (scientific name coming soon)
This is the bark of a young Ceiba. This tree will loose its thorns as it gets old.
Sometimes is neccesary to cut a branch with fruits or seeds to be able to identify a species.
Up on this concrete water tank grows a plant which many kinds of birds like to feed on. A sample of the plant is taken to the Botanical Garden in order to find out what it is.
This is the fruit of the mysterious plant which birds love.
Photography is a useful resource to study the plants.
The forest looks precious in the morning light
The preliminary observation made by the botanists concludes that this forest is a young one, with few tall, broad and old trees distributed mainly in the south part of the land plot, and a lot of young and thin trees competing for a space to grow and reach the sun. Since there are only a few species of trees in this forests, this would be a good moment to introduce new species and fruit trees in the northern part of the farm to make the forest richer in diversity and with the time to attract more animals.
Flowers fell from a tall tree after the rain.
Very soon we will have the complete characterization of species made the Botanical Garden
